I tend to think charging is not a good idea, not for financial reasons, more....and I count myself in this group unfortunately, apathy/indifference when confronted with what can/is regarded as additional hassle.

Ease of registration should be the goal to encourage future users.

Will add that I think the forum is very good and I am happy to go with the flow.

Paul, I too have several clients that are happy to leave their current software

"as is" and accept the consequences - the problem with this is that you are never

100% sure when the compromise took place and whether or not are just

restoring the problem - yes you can look at logs etc but I feel that this is a

reactive response rather than proactive.

Neil, you IT pro you :P One of main reasons for keeping with IPB and just

upgrading to V2 was to minimise change and hence the learning curve

for the members - I know simplicity is desired by many and that there are

a few that like the extra bells and whisltes ;)

Vidar, I like your suggestion re: the competition - ideas?? Administering it may

be a bit of a pain though ...

The more I'm hearing, the more it seems that donations/limited advertising

is the preferred route and I'd be inclined to agree with it.

There's no rush ... :D

Must say, I do like that idea of a competition to raise funds....

I mean, promoting target shooting's a goal of the board, so there's a certain aesthetic beauty to using a method to keep the board going which also fulfils a goal of the board...

edit: Oh, and my vote's for VB3, it's got a raft of handy features. See the shooting forum on boards.ie for an example.

Hello Everyone, as a retail firearms dealer specialising in smallbore target shooting equipment, I am prepared to pay to advertise here, fees based on size of ad required.

My only comp idea was to make it someting easy to organise, and that means no scoring and nobody having to sign things off.

So how about:

You use something like the NSRA published short or long range averages as a handicap, to even things out (or equivalent)

Then you nominate a future event, NSRA meet, open English match, Grand Prix whatever and then you take your average for that event (only one event and once nominated you can't change it!).

Then the winner would be the best of (comp average)/(declared average), or you could use the Macrae thingy if that helps (whatever that is, I don't actually know!)

Fun bit is you obvioulsy have to pick an event where you think you will shoot above your average, since you declare in advance you might get lucky with the weather or stuffed by it. It should mean you can do this if you shoot 3P, air, prone, whatever.

Nobody has to run it, you just log your average and where you got if from (in case anyone is suspicious - surely not) and then nominate and event you know you will shoot and then report the result. (one of the resident IT bods will likely be able knock up some web/forum based spreadsheet thingy that you can enter the numbers in)

Someone just needs to define a start/end date for the period of shooting, (one indoor and/or one outdoor or just one whatever?)

Please help refine/edit/reject its just my ramblings after breifly thinking it over at the w/e since I did suggest a comp I thought I'd better come up with something.....

Being a new user I haven't come across many problems, however it does beg the question, what's wrong with the current system?? I know us techies like to have new "bells & whistles" but do the users really care, as long as it does the stuff they want?? You probably have a better feel for that than me but remember to ask yourself the question anyway.

If the decision is to move away from your current system to one that costs I would vote for the contribution approach. It would help if there was a reminder popping up every few logins to remind peiople that some dosh would be handy and telling them what it pays for. I'm sure ypour imagination can come up with something that changes regularly and isn't too boring!!

Sink,

One of the main reason for changing would be to have a continually supported

system, security updates etc. I'm still swaying towards upgrading to V2 of the

current system in order to minimise disruption/confusion among members.

Still need to have a think (and get the time ;))

Thanks Yardman9/Mac

Neil,

Do any of the options have any facility for a spelling checker (either on-line or hooks to one already on the PC, e.g. Word)? It would help me (and I guess others as well) not only because I can't spell, but also because of poor typing and the very annoying trait of my keyboard to miss out the occasional keypress!

Clive,

Not that I've come across but then again I haven't actively been looking tbh.

Rob's suggestion is probably the best workaround and will impose the least load

on the server ;)

Can you not just type out a message in something like word, spell check & then paste it in here ?

Yeah. But its a pain. What I've done a couple of times is post, copy & past into word, and edit the post with corrections!

Ok folks, I haven't looked into this for quite a while but decided 20mins ago to add a PayPal donation button near the top of the page. It is not compulsary and is at

your discretion.

For those of you feeling generous, then any amount will be gratefully received.

Some of the money will go towards to the hosting costs and hopefully if there is anything left then this will leave options open for improving the site ... whether that's upgrading the forum software or adding more features in the future :D

Many thanks for all your support over the years and helping grow the target shooting community - keep up the good work and advertise the forum where you can.

I suggest that those making a sale through the "Loot" section might wish to consider making donation. A small note to that effect at the start of each "Loot" thread could serve as a reminder.
