neil Posted 17 August 2005 Share Posted 17 August 2005 I don't know about the rest of you but petrol prices are just getting silly now: ------------------------------- 8< ----------------------------------- Rising Petrol Prices - pls read and pass on See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it. We are hitting 95p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)...and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE. It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!! ------------------------------- 8< ----------------------------------- It's.... somewhat naive IMHO (understatement). OK, downright wrong. Oil prices aren't going to come down because we all boycott ESSO. The big oil companies don't set international oil prices, or production limits. It's supply vs. demand, and the amount of oil wanted around the world is getting pretty close to the amount capable of being supplied. This was being pointed out a few months ago, as the OPEC ministers were agreeing to boost world production, and the Economist was warning that until the increased production came on-stream, that prices would be high. Now, you might argue that fuel duty could be reduced, but that has absolutely zero, nada, zilch to do with OPEC or BP or ESSO. Personally? I think the author either hasn't got a clue, or it's a deliberate attempt at propaganda from someone with an axe to grind. If the latter (my bet), you can take your pick as to their motives (blame the cartels / oil companies / globalisation / lizards dressed in people suits / UN / secret world governments / how big a chain letter can I create, and will it make the national news and boost my ego). Guest LordRod Posted 17 August 2005 Share Posted 17 August 2005 Absolutely agree with Martin here. Got this same email in my inbox yesterday and sent a similar response to that. For a start, as far as remember, Esso and BP are not the same company!! Also, I believe that petrol retailers make about 0.5p per litre profit from selling petrol after the Duty (47.1p per litre), VAT (17.5%), buying the petrol from the refinery, transportation, storage, marketing, and running the service station - so I have no idea where this guy's getting his proposed 30p reduction from. However, I did smell oil in my garden the other day, so I'm off to set my Black and Decker onto the patio...although now I come to think of it, the guy next door was working on his moped engine at the time...damn! RobStubbs Posted 17 August 2005 Share Posted 17 August 2005 I'm not sure I follow any of this except that petrol is way too expensive. I do note it is very similar in France now, but I don't quite understand how the US can have such low petrol prices compared to us. If my maths is correct they must be selling it below cost Rob. Guest Posted 17 August 2005 Share Posted 17 August 2005 I think the difference in prices round the world is due to tax. In the Uk this is calculated as a percentage of the sale price. I think it would be much better if the government said it was X pence a litre and the chancellor stopped cashing on on high oil prices. Then the rise in oil prices would be the only rise in prices at the pump.

Guest ilovemybed Posted 17 August 2005 Share Posted 17 August 2005 If everyone switched to LPG, then that would show 'THEM' what we think of petrol prices. Up till the Government realised and started putting more tax on LPG that is... I just read that TSB Report. Standards of English really are slipping. Is he a Chief Economist? Blimey. It reads like a bad GCSE comprehension essay! You can stop reading now if you don't care what's wrong with it... Starting a sentece with 'But' (several times), putting a comma before 'and' (I know that's acceptable as an Oxford comma but that wasn't an Oxford comma), using "This" in reference to some fact mentioned in a different paragraph and to start a new paragraph, ascribing the ability to believe to inanimate entities, the list goes on! There are 11 incidents of the word "but" in the thing - surely he could have thought of another word?? I almost expected to find "alot" in there somewhere. Somebody get me my red pen! Guest trev Posted 7 September 2005 Share Posted 7 September 2005 Apparently the petrol blockades are due to start some time next week, if our Government refuse to lower the tax. And here is an Americans viewpoint of their shortage. THE OIL SHORTAGE A lot of folks can't understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in America. ~~~ Well, there's a very simple answer. ~~~ Nobody bothered to check the oil. ~~~ We just didn't know we were getting low. ~~~ The reason for that is purely geographical. ~~~ Our OIL is located in ~~~ Alaska ~~~ California ~~~ Oklahoma and TEXAS ~~~ ~~~ Our DIPSTICKS are located in Washington D.C.
